Gov. McDonnell has arrived. The show will start in a minute or so.
McDonnell: After 4 years, I'm down to my last three shows here.
McDonnell on Virginia governor's election: "It's a tough state to win."
McDonnell on elections: supports Ken Cuccinelli's positions on jobs and education, but says the federal government shutdown has given Terry McAuliffe an advantage.
McDonnell says the federal shutdown hurt Virginia's economy and showed "incredible dysfunction" in Washington.
On Cruz campaigning for Cuccinelli:
That was a long planned, separate event. My problem is, and I said look this is an embarrassment that the us that has two functions which is to deliver govt sswervices and have a government that works and they failed on botht hose points. We have crisis after crisis. Sequestration. etc. Governors look at this and think what is going on, and it's coming again. I just think we need to have leaders rise up and say enough.
Are you able to pinpoint where the shutdown has damaged Virginia's economy?
People weren't working, people couldn't come to the national partks, so we're seeing a little bit of ebbing. But we're still ahead of target. We won't know until later what the impact of the shut down will be.
Why aren't you on the campaign trail with Cuccinelli?
Well I have been, but listen I'm busy governing as well. My job is to govern and get things done. Got 90 days left and that's my primary focus. I have made it very clear I'm strongly supported Ken Cuccinelli. I've done the things that I've been asked to do by his campaign. He's the guy who is best for the Virginia residents.
If you're asking if I've been with him recently, the answer is no. As for the next week, we'll see.
I can only tell you that if people like the job that I've been able to get done, and like the direction of the state, if they like that then I'd say Ken Cuccinelli is the best choice to keep things going. That's my message to people. If you want success to continue in Virginia, then Ken Cuccinelli's the person to vote for.
Is the libertarian candidate hurting Cuccinelli?
I'm not a pundit. I think it's in a way a little bit of a protest where people say I don't like the tone of this campaign, there has been some of that, and the independent voters particularly have said look I'm going to cast a protest vote. And look, hes a good guy on paper. It seems to me he's pulling about equally from both parties. But I think votes for him are more of a protest of the current climate.
Ronald from Richmond: I have been trying to get my voters rights restored for years now. 25 years ago I had a little run-in with the law, and year after year after year, I have not been able to get any results.
McDonnell: This is a critically important issue I think because it goes to justice and what we believe as Americans. We believe in redemption and we believe in second chances. We have set a policy of having the fastest and fairest voting rights restoration system in history, but it's just a good start. There is still a lot more to do. It's down to 60 days. It takes 60 days for us to get back you, it used to be a year.
The law really is what the governor says it is. We've taken away all the requirements except that you've served your time and you've paid back the fees and restitution. This is individual responsibility. The state tries to help them when they get out. And I understand, it's hard. You come out of prison and you have a lot of obligations, child support, etc. We don't want them to fail. We don't want them to come back. It's expensive. There are more victims.
Caller: What would you do to get the trust back of Virginians?
I've been in office for many years and had the pleasure to do my best to make this a better state. I think a lot of people are pleased with what's going on in Virginia. So I think people ultimately get judged on their merits. We have cut expenses and put money into high value area.
Duane: Truckers 10-hour break - not enough parking spots:
I recognize the importance of rest stops. It's really a significant public safety issue for tourists, travelers, truckers. I'm glad their open and clearly being used if there are no parking spaces.
What about an initiative and referendum system in government?
California has that and I think many say it hadn't worked out the way they wanted out there. We have a representative democracy in Virginia, that is people don't go up, the elect people to represent them. We do have the ability to have direct citizen input.
Control of failing schools:
The time for excuses for failure in Virginia are over. We're competing with the world, not just our neighbors. The schools that are under-performing, no more excuses. The kids don't have time to wait.
Next year, a school could be closed. The process will be in place next year so the alternatives will be up and running by then.
