Oakdale snaps Damascus’ nation-high 53-game winning streak
DAMASCUS, Md. — Damascus High School opened Friday night’s game like so many before, grinding down the field for a 16-play touchdown drive that consumed much of the first quarter. But for a team that had won 53 straight games entering the Maryland 2A Regional Final against Oakdale, just about everything that came next was out of the ordinary.
The Bears blocked a punt for a safety, turned the Swarmin’ Hornets over multiple times and clamped down on defense, scoring the final 24 points en route to a 24-7 victory.
The 53-game win streak is the new Maryland state record, but was snapped just a few weeks after the Hornets (11-1) set it.
“The streak’s their thing,” said Oakdale head coach Kurt Stein. “The streak doesn’t really have anything to do with us ... We gotta win the next two. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Oakdale (11-0) advances to the state semifinals next week.
