  • WTOP Traffic reports a water rescue is underway at Canal Road near Reservoir Road.
  • Additional flash flood warnings posted around the region:

    WASHINGTON - Much of the WTOP listening area is under a Flash Flood Warning as slow moving storms with heavy rains pound the region.

    D.C. is under a Flash Flood Warning until 6 a.m.

    In Virginia:

    • Fairfax, Falls Church and Alexandria as well as Arlington and Fairfax counties until 6 a.m.
    • Prince William, Fauquier, Stafford and Culpeper counties until 5:15 a.m.
    • Manassas and Manassas Park until 4 a.m.
    • Further out, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Greene, Madison, Charlotte and Page counties are also under a Flash Flood Warning until 5:15 a.m.
    • The warning for Loudoun County has expired.

    In Maryland:

    • Montgomery County until 6 a.m.
    • Prince George's County until 4:30 a.m.
    • The warning for Howard County has expired.

    A Flash Flood Warning means floods are imminent or occurring in the warned area.

    Those in the Flash Flood Warning area are urged to be especially cautious at night, particularly when driving and to act quickly if flooding is observed. If water is rising it is important to move to higher ground immediately.

    Most of the region also remains in a flood morning through the early morning.

  •      The bad weather has been causing some power outages in the area. 

         At 5 a.m. BGE reports more than 1,000 outages in Prince George's county.

         Dominion reports about 600 outages in Fairfax and Prince William counties. 

         Pepco reports about 500 homes and businesses without power in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

    * AT 1032 AM EDT VDOT REPORTS NUMEROUS ROAD CLOSURES CONTINUE ACROSS  PORTIONS OF THE WARNED AREA. RADAR ESTIMATES AND RAIN GAGES REPORT  THAT AS MUCH AS FOUR TO SIX INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN IN SOME AREAS  SINCE LAST NIGHT. ALTHOUGH RAIN IS DIMINISHING IN THE AREA LATE THIS  MORNING...ADDITIONAL RAINFALL MAY DEVELOP BY EARLY AFTERNOON. THE  THREAT FOR SMALL STREAM AND ROAD FLOODING CONTINUES.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

    A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED. STREAM RISES WILL BE SLOW. HOWEVER...ALL INTERESTED PARTIES SHOULD TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS IMMEDIATELY.

    MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED  ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE...TURN AROUND...DONT DROWN.

    IN HILLY TERRAIN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF LOW WATER CROSSINGS WHICH ARE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS IN HEAVY RAIN. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ACROSS FLOODED ROADS. FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES. IT TAKES ONLY A FEW INCHES OF SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.
