Silver Line: Ask the WTOP Traffic Team Live
The WTOP Traffic Team is here to answer all your questions about the opening of the new Silver Line from bus route changes to Metro fares to park-and-ride changes.
WASHINGTON - After years of construction, delays and waiting, Metro is ready to open Phase I of the Silver Line to riders on Saturday, July 26.
The line is the first extension of the Metrorail system since 2004 and is expected to transport thousands of commuters and revolutionize Tysons Corner.
WTOP Traffic reporters will answer all your Silver Line questions during the days leading up to the grand opening about the new line and what it means for commuters.
The first stretch of the Silver Line will take riders as far west as Reston but eventually the $5.6 billion project will extend Metro beyond Dulles International Airport.
Based on the travel times listed on the WMATA website, it appears it will now take longer to get from Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride (taking the 980 to Wiehle - Reston East) to Metro Center than it did when the 980 went straight to West Falls Church. Is that correct?
What riders think about the Silver Line, WTOP's Kristi King reports.
Will people be able to park in the Tysons Corner shopping parking to ride metro? If not, what will stop them? Will the mall start charging for parking like at Ballston?
These are the links Max was speaking of on the new bus service to and from Dulles via Wiehle-Reston East (Fairfax Connector: Washington Flyer) and the 5A will continue to run from DC and Rosslyn to the Airport. Plans to cancel the 5A have been scrapped for now.
Does Metro have a long-term plan to assuage Blue Line riders from Va who are being completely inconvenienced with the Silver Line? We all know the issue, especially from Old Town to Foggy Bottom. I sincerely hope the switching trains via Yellow Line is not a permanent solution.
Will there be new bus service from the Silver Line's Wiehle-Reston East stop to Dulles Airport or will passengers still have to take the existing 5A bus from L'Enfant Plaza/Rosslyn to get to Dulles?
Why so expensive. Fairfax Connector Bus from Reston to WFC was $1.60 each way and then it was $3.70 to Faragut West. Now its $5.90 each way, the Bus is now $1.70 to the Silver Metro or its $4.85 park. $10.60 a day is now going to be $15-$17 a day. Do you really think people are going to pay that, might as well drive in to DC. Thank you
Please (re) question Dan Stessel on his statement about fares base on distance. It costs the same amount to go from Franconia/Springfield to Rockville, for example, (26 miles) that it does to go from downtown DC/Judiciary Square to Rockville (16 miles). Metro has long said the fare is based on distance but it is not accurate--like everything else on Metro.
Why does it costs so much to ride the Silver Line? From Wheile to Rosslyn it will be $5.90 one way. Right now I pay $3.35 from West Falls to Rosslyn. That is almost double the cost. For now I'll be driving to West Falls. It's better for me than anything on the Sliver Line.
Will this line ease traffic jams in the area?
